Southeastern Sweeps Day Three Matches at the Midwestern State Invite

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Southeastern bounces back on the final day of action at the Midwestern State Invitational, picking up a sweep over William Jewell before defeating Newman 3-1.

"This weekend gave us the chance to measure ourselves against some strong teams. We faced adversity early, but I was really proud of how our group bounced back and found its rhythm," said coach Carmen Kinsey. "To finish the weekend with two convincing wins it shows the character and resilience of this team. We're learning quickly, growing together, and I'm excited about the momentum we're building moving forward."

The Savage Storm (2-2) heads to Kingsville, Texas, for their next round of matches, where they will take part in the Javelina Volleyball Classic on September 11-13.

MATCH ONE: SE 3, WJ 0

SET ONE
Southeastern used a fast start to build a 5-1 lead behind a pair of kills from Maci Morrison, and the blue and gold later extended their edge to 11-6 with three consecutive points. After weathering SE's quick start, William Jewell soon found its footing with a run of scores to eventually grab its first lead of the frame, 14-13.

The two sides battled back and forth from there, and it was Southeastern that got the first breakthrough with a 4-0 run to push back in front, 22-19. The Storm closed out the set through Gabby Jones with a block assist and a kill by the freshman to claim a 25-22 set win.

SET TWO
Little separated the two teams in the early exchanges, as the frame saw five ties with the score locked at 10-all. Noelia Rocha began to heat up, sparking a 5-0 run with three kills and a solo block to break the deadlock and give the blue and gold a 15-12 lead. SE continued to carry the momentum, dominating the final rallies of the set and closing out the frame on a 6-0 run, which featured a pair of kills from Jones, to win 25-16.

SET THREE
The Storm's strong finish to set two carried over into the third, opening the frame with a 13-3 advantage behind a 5-0 run and later a 6-0 burst. SE stayed on the front foot, as Rocha chipped in two more kills and the Storm would build a 4-0 spurt to stretch the gap to 19-5. In control, Southeastern closed out the frame, winning 25-10.

Jones and Rocha led the Storm attack against William Jewell with 13 and 10 kills, respectively, while Rocha held a .444 attack percentage. Setter Jasmin Dion tallied 30 assists and 12 digs for her second double-double of the weekend, and Morrison led the defense at the net with 4.0 total blocks.

MATCH TWO: SE 3, NU 1

SET ONE
It was all Storm in the beginning, as the blue and gold raced ahead to 10-3 with three kills from Morrison and another two by Alaina Armstrong. Southeastern kept the pace up, extending its lead to 19-7 on a 5-0 run, but the Jets would soon apply some pressure with a flurry of points to cut the Storm's edge to 20-14. However, Southeastern would close the door on any late momentum for Newman, scoring five of the final seven points to win 25-16.

SET TWO
Southeastern got the scoring going, taking a 5-1 lead, which soon grew to 9-5 after kills from Morrison and Rocha. The Storm defense had a hand in the next points with blocks from Armstrong, Alexis Williams and Morrison to keep a five-point edge over the Jets, 15-10. Newman began to close the gap and would bring it to a one-point set, but a kill by Dion sparked a 7-1 run to close out the frame. Kylee Turner capped off the run with a service ace to secure a 25-18 set victory.

SET THREE
The Storm and Jets were locked at 7-7 to start the frame, and the two sides remained deadlocked through the next rallies with the score tied 15-15. A kill and block from Williams kept the frame in stalemate at 16-all and 17-all, but a quick burst of points from Newman broke the deadlock open, as they went ahead 20-17. SE continued to battle, tying the set again at 23-all on a 4-0 run, though a late timeout from Newman allowed the Jets to regroup and win the frame 25-23.

SET FOUR
The fourth set started with the Storm in front 9-5 after the blue and gold used a 5-0 run to grab their first lead of the frame. Southeastern added to its advantage moments later with another flurry, scoring four straight points, including back-to-back aces from Turner to stretch the lead to 16-11. Newman soon found its rhythm and rattled off a 7-1 burst to tie the set 18-18, but a quick reply from SE saw the lead flip back in its favor 21-18.

Jones and Morrison would combine for three of the final four points to secure the Storm's second match win of the day, winning the final frame 25-22. Jones led the attack with 14 kills and added 11 digs for a double-double. Morrison chipped in 12 kills on a .458 attack percentage and had 4.0 total blocks, while Armstrong led the defense at the net with five denials. Dion quarterbacked the attack, dishing out 39 assists, and Laura Weatherford led the back row with 13 digs.
