DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern mounted a ninth-inning rally, but saw its comeback fall short in a 10-8 loss in the series opener versus Oklahoma Baptist on Friday afternoon at Mike Metheny Field.
The loss drops the Savage Storm to 19-12 on the season overall and 11-8 in Great American Conference play with the final two games of the series slated for a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
Alex Showalter led the way with a pair of hits, including a homer, while
Tyler Payton,
JJ Bush,
Carter Olson, and
Easton Ford each added a hit.
Payton and Olson added homers to Showalter's, while Bush and Ford each doubled.
Payton logged three RBI, while Olson added two, with Ford and Showalter driving in one each.
Dylan Hill got the start and took the loss after allowing nine runs, seven earned on nine hits with five walks and four strikeouts.
Marcus Mott tossed 3.1 innings of effective relief, allowing a run on three hits with three strikeouts.
Zach Andrews closed out the game with two innings of work, allowing one hit and striking out four.
OBU got on the board first with a pair of solo homers in the top of the first inning.
The Storm answered with a two-run homer in the bottom half of the first frame and knotted the game at 2-2.
The Bison picked up three runs in the top of the second and took that lead into the third.
In the bottom half of the third SE answered with a run on a Ford bases-loaded walk, but would leave the bases loaded trailing 5-3.
OBU put up a four-run top of the fourth to extend its lead to 9-3, but the Storm answered with another run in the bottom half on a Showalter solo homer, cutting the deficit to 9-4.
The Bison tacked on a run in the seventh inning, pushing its lead to 10-4.
The Storm put a rally together in the ninth, closing the gap to 10-7 on a Payton three-run homer and then to 10-8 when Kirk scored as
Hayden Carpenter reached on an error, but that was where the rally ended.
