Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Southeastern opened the season with a pair of tough losses to former conference rivals, dropping a 3-0 match to No. 15 Angelo State before falling 3-1 to Midwestern State on Friday evening in the Rattler-Hilltopper Classic in San Antonio, Texas.
The Savage Storm fared best in the nightcap in which they dropped the first two sets to MSU 25-13 and 25-11 before answering with a 25-18 win before falling in the clinching set 25-18.
The opener was not kind to SE at all as the Storm fell in straight-sets 25-20, 25-14 and 25-7.
Megan Kunkel paced the attack against ASU with 11 kills, while
Emily Gentle added seven. As a team SE was outhit .333-to-.075.
Madelynne Cera dished out 17 assists in her debut at setter but added four kills and five digs in the effort.
Taylor Benner paced the defense on the back row with 19 digs, while
Natasha Smith turned in a team-best four blocks.
Against the Mustangs, Gentle turned in the day's best kill count with 14 along with a double-double by adding 10 digs.
Kunkel added seven kills and eight digs.
Cera dished out a double-double of her own, handing out 28 assists with 13 digs.
Benner matched her opening effort on the back row with a second 19-dig performance.
SE will conclude the classic on Saturday with an 11 a.m. match with the host St. Mary's before ending the tournament with a 5 p.m. matchup with Abilene Christian.
