DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern's 2012 Great American Conference opener did not go according to plan as the Savage Storm fell 3-0 to Southern Nazarene on Tuesday evening in Bloomer Sullivan Gymnasium.
SE stumbled out of the gates with a 25-10 loss and was tripped up 25-13 in the second set before mounting a run in the final set only to fall 25-18. The loss drops the Storm to 1-8 on the season and 0-1 in GAC play.
The Southeastern offense struggled and finished with a .079 hitting percentage on the contest.
The squad was paced by seven kills from
Megan Kunkel, while
Emily Gentle added six.
Madelynne Cera dished out 21 assists on the contest while adding six digs, one kill and a block.
Defensively, the Storm was led on the back row by
Taylor Benner who had a match-high 13 digs, while Kunel added nine.
Jasmine Everage chipped in a pair of blocks at the net, while four others each had one.
In contrast, SNU, competing in its first ever GAC contest, turned in a .359 hitting percentage and was led by Kira Roberts with 15 kills.
The Savage Storm will now enter its longest in-season break of the year, nine days, before getting back into conference play with a challenging road matchup with rival East Central on Sept. 20 in Ada, Okla., at 7 p.m.
