PITTSBURG, Kan. – Southeastern opened the 2013 season with a 3-1 win over Pittsburg State on its home court, but could not complete the opening day sweep thanks to a 3-0 loss to Rockhurst in the late game on Friday at the Pitt State Classic.
 
The Savage Storm posted matching 25-23 set wins in the first two sets before dropping the third set 25-22, but would answer to close out the match with a 25-21 win in the fourth.
 
In game two RU jumped out in front and stayed there winning by scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-20.
 
Megan Kunkel turned in a match-high 19 kills against PSU in the opener, hitting .217 and completing the double-double with a team-best 18 digs.  She also added three blocks which was tied for the team lead.
 
Ariel Sanders added eight kills and 
Courtney Miller turned in six in her return to the court after missing last season.
 
Three others reached double-0digits in digs, with 
Kristin Martin adding 15, followed by 13 each from 
Marina Dias and Miller.
 
Dias handled the setting duties and was solid with 38 assists over the four sets.
 
In the second contest, Kunkel again turned in a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs.
 
Her 14 kills were almost half of the Storm kills total for the match.
 
Dias was not quite able to match her first match performance, but she did finish the three-set match with 27 assists.
 
Dias also added nine digs, while 
Taylor Benner chipped in eight.
 
Julia Benford was in on all three of SE's blocks.
Southeastern will be back in action on Saturday with a 10 am meeting with Missouri Southern State, followed by a 1 pm match against Quincy.
