Volleyball Stumbles Against DBU

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern got a combined 23 kills from Julia Benford and Arianna Baker, but a rough fourth set kept the Savage Storm from prolonging the match, falling to Dallas Baptist 3-1 on Tuesday night in Bloomer Sullivan Gymnasium.
 
The loss drops SE to 4-15 on the season as it heads back into conference play with a two-match road swing to Arkadelphia, Ark., to play Henderson State on Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. and Ouachita Baptist on Oct. 17 at 1 p.m.
 
The Storm middles led the offensive charge with Benford turning in 12 kills on the night, while Baker added 11 and hit .474 for the match.
 
They got help from Brittney Owens who turned in seven kills in her first action in a month, while Kristina Bergman added six.
 
Alissa Benson posted 34 assists in the match but was busy all over the floor with eight digs, four kills and two blocks.
 
Charlene Nerio finished the match with 15 digs, while Benson and Owens each added eight and Kristi Carter pitched in six.
 
Baker turned in five blocks, including a pair of solos, while Bergman added two.
 
DBU jumped to an early lead with a 25-16 win in the opening set, but the Storm bounced back in the second set, ending a late-set Patriot run and reeling off four-straight points to take the set 26-24 and event he match at 1-1.
 
The teams traded runs throughout the third set with six ties and numerous lead changes, the last tie coming at 23-23 after a pair of Storm points, however, the Patriots would answer with the final two points in the set for the 25-23 win and a 2-1 edge in the match.
 
SE was unable to recover in the fourth set as DBU ran off an early 11-1 run that allowed them to pull away for a 25-12 win to seal the match.
