DENVER, Colo. – No. 19 Southeastern attempted to rally after getting swept in doubles play by No. 14 Midwestern State, but unfortunately saw its 2016 season and postseason run come to an end in the NCAA Championships Round of 16 with a 5-2 loss on Wednesday in Denver, Colo.
Â
The loss snaps an eight-match winning streak through the end of the regular season and into the postseason and the Savage Storm will finish the year with a 16-3 record which included its first Great American Conference Tournament Championship as well as its first berth in and victory at regionals.
Â
The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead in doubles with matching 8-4 wins at numbers two and three.
Â
SE had a shot to get one back as
Maksim Fil and
Tiago Ferreira pushed the No. 22-ranked duo of Kyle Davidson and Ramon Toyos to a tiebreaker, but dropped it 7-3 and the match 9-8 to fall behind 3-0.
Â
Petar Popovic would kick off the Storm rally try in singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Dylan Hall at number six to make the score 3-1.
Â
Shortly after
Alberto Blesa added his own 6-3, 6-3 straight-sets win over Dillon Pineda at number four singles to close it to 3-2.
Â
Alcabas would run into trouble in the two position as No. 47 ranked Toyos would edge out a 7-6 tiebreaker win in the first set and hand Alcabas the los, 6-2, in the second set for a 4-2 lead.
Â
In all, four sets in singles would go to tiebreakers in the closely matched contest, one of those being a 7-6 first set win by
Jack Gibbens at number three, but he would fall 6-3 in the second set.
Â
Ferreira would provide another after dropping the first set 6-1 he responded with a 7-6 win, but trailed 5-3 in the third set.
Â
However, Gibbens and Ferreira's matches would be left unfinished as the match was decided at the number one position.
Â
Fil took the opening set off No. 40 ranked Davidson 6-3, but he would also find himself in a tiebreaker in set two, falling short and dropping the set 7-6 to even the match. Davidson would then pick up a 6-2 win in the third set which clinched the 5-2 win for MSU.
