DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern men's basketball was presented with a proclamation at a city council meeting declaring March 12, 2019 as "Savage Storm Men's Basketball Day" in the City of Durant.
Â
Durant Mayor Jerry Tomlinson, City Manager Tim Rundel, and the entire City Council presented head coach
Kelly Green and the entire SE men's basketball team with the proclamation Tuesday night in the week leading up to the team's first trip to the NCAA Division II National Tournament since the 2006-07 season.
Â
"I want to thank the mayor, the city council and everyone that is here today," said Green. "
Â
"We do need to tell our players," he continued jokingly, "That just because it is Southeastern Day that does not mean free pizza or free burgers at any of the local establishments"
Â
"We're very excited," he added speaking to the meeting. "Sunday was quite a roller coaster for us. That's the great thing about sports. Sports bring communities together. Sports unite communities and they unite countries, not only teams. Â And these guys have represented Southeastern, they have represented Durant, and they have represented the Great American Conference in a way that you all should be very, very proud of."
Â
The Savage Storm are coming off a runner-up finish in the GAC Tournament on Sunday and a 22-7 season overall which earned them a No. 7 seed in the Central Region tournament in Maryville, Mo., where they will face Northern State in the first round on March 16 at 2:30 p.m.
