Storm Softball Splits Home Opener

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern opened the day with a dominant pitching effort for a 4-1 win in the conference opener, but saw the tides turn in game two with a 5-4 loss to split the home-opening double-header against Southwestern Oklahoma State on Friday afternoon at the Southeastern Softball Field.

The split moves the Savage Storm to 9-5 overall on the year and 1-1 in Great American Conference play heading into the final two games of the series slated for a noon double-header on Saturday.

In the opener, Kady Fryrear and Kamarie Wallace each collected a pair of hits, while Symphoni Shomo, Bailey Beard, and Kyia Monahwee each posted one.

Karsyn Brigance would drive in a pair of runs, with Monahwee and Wallace each adding an RBI.

Amberlyn Walsworth got the start and picked up the win after carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing a hit and leaving the game with no runs on one hit with two strikeouts.

Katie McCullar came on to toss the final 2.0 innings and allowed one unearned run on one hit with two K's.

Shomo led off game one with a single before stealing second and coming home on back-to-back sac bunts to take a 1-0 lead.

SE would add two more in the third, the first one as Shomo worked her way around the bases before scoring on a Brigance RBI groundout which was followed by a Monahwee bunt single which plated Beard for a 3-0 lead.

Wallace would add a solo homer in the fourth to push the lead to 4-0 after four.

That would hold until the top of the seventh when the Bulldogs would take advantage of a pair of Storm errors to pick up a run but McCullar would get out of trouble and SE would hang on for the 4-1 win.

Gracie Ore collected a trio of hits in game two, while Shomo added two.

Tena Spoolstra, Wallace, and Ivy Amador each drove in a run.

Ashley Hedrick got the start and was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work.

McCullar would come on and was hit for three runs on three hits with three K's in 2.0 innings.

SE took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Brittany Chatellier scored on an error.

SWOSU would strike next, tying the game with an RBI single before loading the bases for a grand slam which put the Bulldogs ahead 5-1.

SE would rally in the bottom half of the sixth with Wallace driving in a run, followed by RBI from Amador on a bases-loaded walk and Spoolstra the same way, but the rally would end with the Storm still trailing 5-4 which would prove to be the final score.
