DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern collected a 3-1 win over Southwestern Oklahoma State in a pitcher's duel to open Saturday's action, but needed the big bats in the series finale as the Savage Storm rallied for an 8-7 win in extra innings at the Southeastern Softball Field.
Â
The Saturday sweep lifts SE to 11-5 overall on the season and 3-1 to open Great American Conference play.
Â
Amberlyn Walsworth picked up the win in game one after tossing 5.0 innings and allowing a run on five hits.
Â
Katie McCullar would come on to toss the final two innings without allowing a hit while striking out one to earn the save.
Â
Symphoni Shomo led all hitters with three hits in game one, while
Karsyn Brigance,
Kady Fryrear, and
Kennedy Salyers each added one.
Â
Fryrear,
Augusta Duty, and
Gracie Ore each drove in a run.
Â
Fryrear put the Storm on the board with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first but that lead would be short lived as SWOSU would tie the game in the top of the second.
Â
SE bounced back in the third, first when a pinch-hitting Duty laid down a sac bunt to score Brigance for the lead and then a batter later when Ore drove in Fryrear on an RBI groundout for the 3-1 lead which would hold to be the final score.
Â
The nightcap was a different cup of tea as the Storm collected 12 hits, led by
Kyia Monahwee who picked up three, while Fryrear and Ore each added two.
Â
Shomo, Duty,
Kamarie Wallace,
Ivy Amador, and Salyers each added a hit.
Â
Ashley Hedrick got the start and took a no decision after tossing 4.0 innings and allowing four runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
Â
Walsworth would toss an inning in relief in game two but was touched for two runs on two hits.
Â
McCullar would finish the contest and earn the win after allowing a run on two hits in three innings.
Â
The Bulldogs struck first in game two with a run in the top of the first.
Â
An Ore RBI double and an Amador RBI single would put the Storm back in front 2-1 after two.
Â
That lead did not last long though as SWOSU's leadoff hitter in the third homered to tie the game, followed by the next three hitters reaching before the Bulldogs connected on a grand slam to take a 6-2 lead in the third.
Â
Another Ore RBI single in the fourth would cut into the deficit, but SWOSU would tack on an insurance run in the sixth and would take a 7-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
Â
Three walks would help load the bases for SE in the seventh, but back-to-back fielder's choice outs in the process would leave the bases loaded with two outs.
Â
That's when Fryrear would step to the dish and drive a grand slam well over the wall down the left field line for a game-tying grand slam, sending the game to extra innings tied at 7-7.
Â
Wallace would single to open the inning and move to second on a Salyers single which would set up Shomo's heroics as she would single up the middle and Wallace would beat the throw to the plate for the game winning run in an 8-7 rally victory. Â
