EMPORIA, Kan. – Southeastern closed out its spring schedule on Saturday afternoon with a 12-9 scrimmage victory over Emporia State on the road in Emporia, Kan.
Â
The Savage Storm split its two "game action" style scrimmages in the non-traditional spring created by the cancelation of the fall season due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. It would also host Northeastern State for a more practice structured scrimmage back on March 6.
Â
"Today's scrimmage," said head coach
Tyler Fenwick, "Was another great opportunity to line up against a well-respected opponent outside of our conference and be able to evaluate a lot of positions. I thought our defense played outstanding football and had key stops in in tough situations."
Â
"The offense was spotty and inconsistent," he added, "But was able to make plays when needed. Most importantly we were able to see young players continue to improve and show they can help us in the fall which was the goal from the very beginning when we started back in the fall."
Â
The Storm offense was able to crack the 300-yard mark in total offense, powered primarily by 253 yards through the air with a touchdown.
Â
SE would add 60 yards on the ground with a score.
Â
Southeastern's defense held the Hornets to 52 yards on the ground and forced a pair of turnovers, highlighted by
Jaylen Shaw's fourth-quarter interception near the end zone to preserve the Storm lead.
Â
The SE offense would get in the end zone twice in the first half.
Â
The first came on a 44-yard hook up from Riley Russell to
Marquis Gray to put the Storm on the board, but a missed PAT would leave the lead at 6-0.
Â
SE would close the half with a 10-yard
Deundre Wheeler touchdown run with 25 seconds to play in the second quarter, stretching the lead to 12-0.
Â
ESU would tack on a field goal in the third and add a touchdown after returning a deflected interception with 11:01 to play, but the Storm defense would shut the door and hold on for the 12-9 victory.
