Men's Tennis Sweeps Singles in Season Opening Win

DURANT, Okla. – Despite weather delaying the start of the spring season, Southeastern finally took to the court and did so with a sweep of singles play en route to a 6-1 victory over Texas-Permian basin on Monday afternoon.

The win gets the Savage Storm off to a 1-0 start to the season with its next matchup slated for Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. in Dallas, Texas, against Dallas Baptist.

"Even though we started off very slow in doubles," said head coach Brian Nelson, "We took command in singles. With two starters out of the lineup today, I think the slow start in doubles was just due to some pairs not playing together much and a little nervous playing the first match of the spring. When it came down to singles and everyone doing it on their own, it showed our strength. Marin Jurkovic's singles match was a highlight, down a set and down 5-3 but finding a way to stay in the match and end up winning. That shows something scrapping out that match. We will continue to work hard in practice and get back on court in 11 days vs Dallas Baptist February 18th."
SE took a little bit to shake off the cold weather as UTPB took the two and three doubles positions to win the doubles point, but the Storm began showing signs of life with Stipan Madzar and Marin Jurkovic picking up a 7-5 win at one doubles.

Manuel Pilotto would be the first player to put away his opponent in singles play, cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 win at the number two spot to even the match at 1-1.

Gen Naraya was next up, downing Fernando Siquerra 6-3, 6-2 at number four to give SE a 2-1 lead which would stretch to 3-1 when Madzar polished off a 6-4, 6-4 win over Enrique Sanchez at the one position.

Thabo Ncube would get the honor of securing the game winning point, picking up a 6-4, 6-0 win at number five over Timon Kohler.

Jurkovic would finish off his sweep of his day's matches with a 6-7, 7-5, 6-3 win at number three while Marcus Del Rosario rounded out the singles sweep with a 6-3, 6-1 win at number six to make the final score 6-1.
