Savage Storm Men's Rodeo Second at FHSU Rodeo

HAYS, Kan. – Southeastern locked in a trio of College National Finals Rodeo qualifiers as the men's team pushed to a second-place finish at the Fort Hays State Rodeo, while the women finished eighth in the penultimate rodeo of the 2024-25 schedule.
 
Braden Tyrer, Tyler Griffin, and Blake Carter each locked up CNFR qualifications by solidifying their top-three positions regionally in their respective events, with Tyrer and Griffin in the bareback riding while Carter locked in a regional championship in the tie down roping.
 
The men's performance maintained their second place standing in the region and moved to within 130 points of the top spot, while the women also held firm to their second-place ranking, holding a 620-point edge over the third-place team.
 
Leading the pack for the Savage Storm in the bareback riding is Tyrer who turned in a score of 76 in the first round to take second place. He followed with an 86 in the finals to lock up first place in the round and win the average. The win moved him to second place in the region standings and secures his position to the CNFR. Tyrer holds a chance at winning the region in the event as he trails first place Dylan George from Fort Scott CC by only 55 points.
 
Griffin turned in a score of 71 in to open the weekend, splitting 5th/6th place. He came back in the finals with a 78.5 placing second place in the final round, and splitting 2nd/3rd in the for the weekend in the average. The finish also secures his qualification to the CNFR. Griffin is a past region champion and finished top 4 at the CNFR the last time he qualified.
 
Colton Matlock carded a 71 on his first ride, splitting 5th/6th place. He followed it with a 70.5 in the final round to earn a 4th place finish in the round, and a fifth-place finish in the average. Matlock is currently sixth in the region standings going into OPSU.
 
Luke Thrash opened his weekend with an 85.5 in the opening round, securing first place in the first round.  Unfortunately, he was unable to compete in the final round of competition. Thrash is a past CNFR qualifier and is fifth in the region standings leading up to OPSU.
 
Owen Brouillette who was out the 1st semester due to an injury is currently in 10th place in the region going into the final rodeo of the regular season.
 
In the tie down roping, Rowdy Nimrod turned in an 8.8 to take first place in the first round of competition but fell on some bad luck finals and took a not time, taking him out of the average.  Following the FHSU Rowdy sits 13th place in the region.
 
Carter turned in a 10.4 in the first round, splitting 4th/5th place. He came back and tied his calf down in an 8.3 run, turning in the fastest run of the rodeo and securing the short round win and the average title at FHSU. Carter secured his region championship and his first qualification to the CNFR. 
 
Jarvis Demery had some bad luck at the FHSU competition but still remains in 5th position with a fair chance of moving into the top three in the region standings depending on how the OPSU competition plays out. 
 
In the breakaway roping, Kieley Walz turned in a 2.6 to place second in the first round of competition, but was unable to catch in the finals and her no time took her out of the average. She did advance in the standings and sits in fourth, just 50 points out of third place.
 
Hannah Giger currently is splitting sixth position in the region and is 90 points out of third place, and is also looking to hold her position in second in the women's all-around in order to qualify to the CNFR in both the goat tying and breakaway roping.
 
In the saddle bronc riding, Brett Coffman opened with an 83.5, splitting first place in the first round. He followed it up with a 79-point ride which placed fifth in the finals, moving him to third place in the average.
 
Caleb Meeks, who was out the first semester with an injury, currently is 12th in the region. 
 
In the steer wrestling, Rowdy Nimrod turned in a 6.1 to split 3rd/4th place in the first round. He followed it with a time of 13.2 in the finals to place fifth in the round and fourth in the average for the weekend.
 
Demery is currently third in the region in the steer wrestling and is looking to try and advance from 3rd to second place in the all-around which would allow him to advance to the CNFR in both tie down and steer wrestling.
 
In the goat tying, Kayleah Hurst turned in a run of 8.6 to finish fifth place in the first round, but followed up with an 11.1 in the finals, taking her out of the average. She currently sits ninth in the region standings.
 
Giger turned in an 8.8, splitting 11th/12th place in the long-go, but she ran into some trouble in the finals and clocked an 11.3, taking her out of the average.
 
Grace Collins 10th and Tegan Tilley 14th place in the region.
 
In the barrel racing, Emma Ricke qualified with a 17.86 to the final round, where she came back with a 17.93, giving her an eighth place finish for the weekend.
 
Casey Mathis is currently third in the region and looking to secure her third place finish and remain in the top three following the OPSU competition. Mathis is a past region champion and CNFR qualifier.
 
In the team roping, Cutter Cain and Jordan Lovins were a 10.0 in the first round of competition. They came back with a 20.5 in the finals, finishing fourth in the round and fifth in the average.
 
Cain currently sits 10th in the heading in the region standings, while Levi James (heading) and Garrett Hughes (heeling) currently sit in the top 11 in the region standings.
 
Waylon Buquoi finished his weekend in the bull riding by splitting seventh place.
