DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern makes a trip to the Lone Star State on September 11-13 to compete in the Javelina Volleyball Classic hosted by Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The Savage Storm opens play with a match on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 4:30 p.m. against Lake Erie and will later play two contests on Friday versus Bridgeport at 2:30 p.m. and Texas A&M-Kingsville at 6:30 p.m. The blue and gold will conclude play on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m. with a first-time meeting with Sant Martin's.
STORM REPORT
The Savage Storm picked up a pair of wins on the final day at the Midwestern State Invitational, sweeping William Jewell 3-0 before defeating Newman 3-1. Southeastern finished the event 2-2, while freshmen
Gabby Jones and
Jasmin Dion represented the blue and gold on the All-Tournament team.
Dion handled the setting duties for SE during the weekend and averaged 8.28 assists per set for 109 in four matches. The Cedar Park, Texas native also chipped in 36 digs, which helped her to a double-double versus Midwestern State and William Jewell. Finding the end of Dion's sets was another freshman, Jones, who led the Southeastern attack with 47 kills on a .199 attack average. The Lake Belton High School product recorded double-figure kills in the final three matches of the invitational, including a high of 14 against Newman.
Defensively, SE was led by
Maci Morrison and
Alexis Williams at the net, with both players registering 11.0 total blocks. Morrison saw eight of her denials come in the final two contests of the weekend, while Williams got the season going with 5.0 blocks in the opener. On the back row,
Laura Weatherford paced the Storm in the digs department, recording 52 for an average of 4.00 digs per set. Weatherford reached double-digit digs in three of the four matches, including a high of 16 in the win over William Jewell.
SCOUTING LAKE ERIE
Lake Erie picked up two wins in its season opener at the Hall of Fame City Classic, defeating Point Park and Lock Haven. The only loss the Storm suffered during the weekend was a 3-1 defeat to California (Pa.). Sophomore outside hitter Allison Kirch leads the attack for Lake Erie through three matches with 38 kills, while Cecelia Mullen and Kennedy Stewart pace the defense with 37 digs and 10.0 total blocks, respectively.
SCOUTING BRIDGEPORT
Bridgeport opened the year with a 3-2 defeat on the road at Pace, which saw the Purple Knights fall late in the fifth set 15-11. Ahead of the Javelina Volleyball Classic, Bridgeport will first stop in Rockville Centre, N.Y., for a match against Molloy on Wednesday evening. The Purple Knights' attack is led by Hailey Jessen and Madison Mohan after one contest, with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
SCOUTING TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE
The Javelinas had a near-perfect weekend to start the new season, as they went 3-1 at the Union University Volleyball Tournament. Among Kingsville's three wins included a 3-2 win over Harding in the first match of the tournament, as well as victories over Lane College and Drury. Rylan Pollard did it all for the Javelinas offense at the weekend, recording 60 kills, including a high of 21 versus Arkansas-Fort Smith, and added 71 assists to her totals.
SCOUTING SAINT MARTIN'S
The Saints left the Eagle Classic hosted by Chardon State with a 3-1 record, having defeated Chardon State, Blake Hills State and the University of Mary. Saint Martin's only defeat came at the hands of Augustana, 3-0. The Saints' top performers over the weekend include Hanna Ligons, who tallied 29.0 total blocks and is averaging 2.23 denials per set, and Emily Garten, who leads the side with 4.00 kills per set.
