TOPEKA, Kan. – The Southeastern doubles team of
Benjamin Fracassi and
Simon Ojeda shines at the ITA Central Regional Championships, winning the consolation finals on Sunday afternoon. In addition, the Savage Storm's
Luke Tinnock would also reach the quarterfinals of the Flight B singles bracket to highlight singles play for the blue and gold.
After losing in the main draw 8-6, the partnership of Fracassi and Ojeda went on a run of four straight wins in the doubles consolation bracket to reach the finals and eventually win 8-4. The run began with an 8-5 win over Newman's Genaro Dagotto and Enrico Belardo, and that win was quickly followed by an 8-5 victory over Thomas Kano and Pedro Pinto from Augustana in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Fracassi and Ojeda would advance after Northwest Missouri State's Bernardo Henriques and Hugo Alvarez Gonzalez had to withdraw. With one match to play, SE's newly formed partnership battled James Edley and Tomas Aramburu in the finals and went on to win 8-4.
During singles play, Tinnock got Flight B play going with a 6-4 and 6-2 win over Luis Denda from Northeastern State and followed with a 6-3 and 6-1 victory over Augustana's Drew Gohl in the round of 16. Tinnock would battle Antonin Leborne from Northwest Missouri State in the quarterfinals, and it would take three sets to decide the winner, with Leborne just edging out Tinnock for a 6-1, 2-6 and 6-10 win.
The Southeastern men's tennis program is back in action on October 17-18 when it heads back to Tahlequah, Okla., for the Riverhawk Battle Royale.
