Shipp to be Inducted into Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame

<p>Former Southeastern Oklahoma State University basketball standout Jerry Shipp has been chosen as a member of this year's class of the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame. </p><p>The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. Cost to attend the ceremony is $150 per person.</p><p>Shipp was born in Louisiana, but graduated from Blue High School in Blue, Okla., and was a member of the SOSU basketball team from 1955-59.</p><p>He was a three-time All-Conference player while at Southeastern and led the conference in scoring twice. He set the conference single-game scoring record with 54 points against Phillips University in 1957. He set a conference free throw record by going 19-for-19 against East Central in 1958.</p><p>Following graduation, Shipp spent five years in Bartlesville, Okla., with the Phillips 66ers of the National Industrial Basketball League and was the highest scoring non-center in the history of the franchise.  He was selected three times to both the AAU All-American team and the National Industrial Basketball League All-Star team and ranks third among the all-time career scorers.</p><p>Shipp was selected to play for Team USA and continued his success into the international game playing in over 20 different countries.</p><p>He was the high scorer on the U.S. team in the Pan-American games in San Palo, Brazil in 1963. He was also the high scorer on the U.S. team that won the World Basketball Tournament in Rio de Janeiro in 1963, and a member of the U.S. team in the world games in Manila, Philippines in 1964. He was a member of the United States team which toured the Soviet Union in 1961 and 1963.</p><p>Perhaps Shipp's greatest honor was in being the captain and high scorer on the U.S. Olympic Basketball Team in the Tokyo games in 1964. He was nominated for the Sullivan Award as the most outstanding U.S. amateur athlete of that year and was later elected to the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame. </p><p>Shipp is a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Southeastern Athletic Hall of Fame on January 21, 1978. His No. 30 jersey has also been retired by Southeastern.</p><p>Joining Shipp in the 2007 class are former Oklahoma State golfer Doug Tewell and former Oklahoma football player Walter &quot;Waddy&quot; Young. Additionally, the 1956 Frederick High School will be honored as the Team of Legend.</p>
