Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, Texas –
Whitney Hamilton connected on a three-run single and
Mindy McElroy went 6.2 innings in her Southeastern debut as the Savage Storm opened the 2013 season with a 3-2 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday evening in San Antonio, Texas.
SE followed up that victory with another win over a former Lone Star Conference rival, taking a 9-7 decision over Tarleton State, however, stats from that contest were not immediately available on Friday night.
The 2-0 start matches the first opening-day sweep since taking both ends of a double-header against Tarleton State on Feb. 2 of 2010.
In the opener,
Jessica Simmons turned in the only multi-hit outing, going 2-for-4 on the contest with a pair of stolen bases.
Hamilton turned in the offense with a three-run single, while
Darrian Williams and McElroy each added hits.
McElroy in the circle would allow two runs, one earned, on four hits with three strikeouts before giving way to
Jacee Bennett who recorded a save by striking out the final batter of the game.
The Storm fell behind in the third inning when TAMUK took advantage of back-to-back singles to open the inning coupled with a passed ball and a wild pitch to mount a 2-0 lead.
McElroy would calm down after the runs scored and allow just one base runner over the next three innings and would retire 11 straight before a runner reached on an error in the sixth inning.
Meanwhile, on offense, SE managed just two runners through the first five innings.
In the top of the sixth, Priest would draw a two-out walk followed by a single by Williams.
Courtney Moore would draw a walk to load the bases and
Kelsey Overacker would pinch run for her at first base.
That's when Hamilton would drive in her three runs on a single to put SE in front 3-2.
SE would load the bases again in the top of the seventh with two outs, but would be unable to get a run in.
McElroy retired the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh, but the eight-hole hitter would reach on and error.
Bennett would come on to face the nine-hole hitter and pick up a strikeout to earn a save in one batter worth of work.
Play in San Antonio will continue on Saturday when SE faces Texas Woman's at 2 p.m. and Incarnate Word at 4 p.m.
