Box Score 2 TUCSON, Ariz. – Southeastern continued its spectacular run at the NFCA Division II Leadoff Classic on Saturday, knocking off No. 6 Minnesota State-Mankato before finishing pool play with a win over Missouri-St. Louis.
The Savage Storm topped MSU-M by a 6-4 score and posted its second shutout of the weekend with a 2-0 win over UMSL.
The wins earned SE a spot in the Gold Championship bracket for the final day of play which will open with an 11 a.m. (CDT) contest with Texas Woman's. The winner of that game will face the winner of West Texas A&M and Grand Canyon State in the championship game.
Southeastern opened the day with its third-straight top-10 opponent in No. 6 MSU-M.
The Mavericks would open up a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, but SE would respond in the fifth inning, first with a
Darrian Williams RBI single that scored
Jessica Simmons and then with a
Whitney Hamilton bases loaded walk with two outs that tied the game at 2-2.
The Storm then came out in the top of the seventh and after the first two batter of the inning reached,
Courtney Moore would double home Simmons and
Lacie Cook to go up 4-2.
After an out,
Laramie Beal would follow suit with a double that scored Moore and
Jacee Bennett would follow with a third double that scored Beal and put the Storm in front 6-2.
MSU-M would pick up two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Storm would hang on for the 6-4 victory.
In the final game of pool play, Southeastern got a near perfect game out of
Mindy McElroy who was perfect heading into the seventh inning before allowing a walk and a hit. She would finish with the win and Bennett would face the final batter for the save.
The Storm would open scoring in the first inning when Simmons singled and stole second before moving to third on a Cook sac bunt. She would score on the next batter when Williams laid down the squeeze bunt.
SE would add on in the third with
Rachel Jones reaching on a single and moving around the bases on back-to-back sac bunts from Simmons and Cook. She would come home on a Williams RBI single.
Southeastern would pick up the win, 2-0.
