Softball Falls in San Antonio Finale

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Southeastern closed out its opening weekend of the 2013 season with an 8-3 loss to host St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon in San Antonio, Texas.
 
The loss drops the Savage Storm to 3-2 overall on the young season heading into the Southeastern Regional Invitational which they will host at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex Feb. 8-10 in Durant, Okla.
 
Jessica Simmons led the offense in the contest with a 2-for-4 outing that included an RBI.
 
Darrian Williams and Courtney Riddle each added hits, while Riddle and Lacie Cook added an RBI each.
 
Mindy McElroy got he start but struggled against the Rattler hitters, allowing five runs on seven hits in one inning of work.
 
Jacee Bennett come on in the second inning and slowed down the STMU attack slightly, allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits in 5.0 innings.
 
The Rattlers came out swinging with three runs in the first inning after the first seven batters to come to the plate reached base safely.
 
Unfortunately that trend continued into the second inning when STMU led off with back-to-back singles that led to McElroy's exit.
 
They would continue against Bennett, however, with a pair of walks and a single that left the score 7-0 after two innings of play.
 
The Storm answered in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs after the first six batters reached base safely and SE cashed in with and RBI fielder's choice from Cook and an RBI single from Simmons.
 
The Rattlers would add an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to push its advantage to 8-2 after four innings.
 
Williams led off the fifth with a double and later scored on a Riddle single to round out the game's scoring and set the final at 8-3.
