Box Score 2 ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – No. 2 Southeastern opened its Saturday twinbill at Henderson State with a 4-1 win, but was unable to pull off the sweep, falling in the finale 5-1 in Arkadelphia, Ark.
The Savage Storm move to 21-6 overall on the year and 6-2 in Great American Conference play.
Southeastern will be back on the diamond March 15-16 with its second-straight league road swing to play a four-game set against Arkansas-Monticello.
In the day's opener, the Storm took a 1-0 lead out of the gate when
Laramie Beal beat out a double-play ball that the HSU shortstop threw wide of first base which allowed
Lacie Cook to score.
The lead stretched to 2-0 in the second inning when Simmons was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate
Mindy McElroy.
The Reddies got one run back when
Jacee Bennett walked her first opposing batter in relief with the bases loaded and one out, but she would work out of trouble without allowing another run.
SE would add two more runs in the top of the sixth inning on a Simmons RBI single and a
Courtney Moore RBI squeeze bunt to mount a 4-1 advantage which would hold to be the final tally.
Moore turned in a 2-for-3 performance in the opener with an RBI, while Simmons finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI and two more stolen bases.
Bennett came on in relief in the fourth inning and recovered from a rough outing on day one, picking up her fifth save of the year after allowing no runs on two hits with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.
McElroy got the start and tossed 3.1 innings and picked up her ninth win, allowing a run on three hits with three K's.
SE fell behind early in the series finale, with HSU jumping to a 1-0 lead after the first inning and stretching that to a 5-0 lead after a run in the third and three more in the fourth inning.
Bennett would drive in Moore in the top of the fifth to try to help her own cause, but that was all the offense the Storm could muster.
Bennett would see her record slip to 11-3 after allowing five runs on five hits with one strikeout.
Shayna Milam would record a hitless two-thirds of an inning before
Rachel Jones would enter to toss the final 2.0 innings without allowing a hit.
Five different SE players would record hits, with Bennett supplying the lone RBI.
