Box Score 2 ALVA, Okla. – It was a tail of two contests for Southeastern on Saturday, but when the dust finally settled the Savage Storm earned a split of Saturday's double-header which helped pick up a series victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State on the weekend in Alva, Okla.
SE dropped the first game on Saturday 14-4 before bouncing back in a big way with a 16-10 win in the finale. The Storm opened the series with a 4-3 win in 13-innings on Friday night.
The Storm piled up 21 hits over two games and 20 runs over just 14 innings of play.
The Storm exploded out of the gate in the finale with a six run first inning, starting with an
Evan Ramsey two-run homer that was bested four batters later by a
Nick Grimmett grand slam.
NWOSU, however, answer with four runs in the bottom of the first inning to cut the lead back to 6-4.
The Rangers added another run in the second to cut the Storm lead to just one run.
Trevor Bowen would pick up a bases loaded walk that scored
Troy McCartney to make the advantage 7-5.
NWOSU would again respond with a run, making the score 7-6 after three innings.
SE would again pick up the pace in the fourth, first with a bases-loaded walk drawn by Springer to score
Tucker Alexander.
That was followed by a
Vance Woodruff groundout that scored Ramsey to make the score 9-6.
That lead stretched to 10-6 when McCartney scored on a wild pitch and one batter later moved to 11-6 on a Bowen single that scored Springer.
Another NWOSU run in the fourth made the score 11-7.
Bowen would later connect on a two-run homer in the sixth to push the advantage to 13-7.
Then in the seventh, Alexander would lead off the inning with a homer to left to push the lead to 14-7.
The Storm would later take advantage of a pair of Ranger errors, first on an RBI single by Woodruff that scored Ramey and then on a Grimmett RBI single that plated Springer for a 16-7 lead.
NWOSU would threaten a rally in the bottom of the seventh, adding three runs on three hits, but SE would end the game on a groundout to second base to preserve the 16-10 win.
Brandon Marris got the start on the hill and posted a complete game despite allowing 10 runs on 14 hits with five strikeouts.
At the plate, Grimmett's 3-for-5 outing lead the way in the contest, while Ramsey, Woodruff and Bowen each added two-hit outings.
Alexander, Ramsey, Grimmett and Bowen each homered in the game.
Grimmett finished with five RBI, Bowen drove in three and the duo of Ramsey and Woodruff each added two.
The Rangers opened the first game with a homer to take a 1-0 lead, but SE answered with a
Josh Smith two-run single in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead.
NWOSU, however, responded with six runs in the bottom of the second and two more in the third to put the Storm in a 9-2 hole early.
A Woodruff RBI single would score Springer followed by a Bowen sac fly to cut the deficit to 9-4 in the top of the fourth.
That was as close as the game would get as the Rangers would score four more runs in the fifth and another in the seventh to close out the 14-4 win.
Ryan Salter, Ramsey and Grimmett each posted two hit outings in the game, with Smith driving in two runs while Woodruff and Bowen each picked up one RBI.
David Cagle got the start but was saddled with the loss after allowing seven runs on six hits in two innings of work.
Eddie Cervantes,
Levi Lewis,
Corey George and
Evan Rice combined to toss the next five innings, allowing seven runs, five earned, on nine hits with only Rice not allowing a run.
