Box Score MONTICELLO, Ark. – For the first time in Great American Conference play, Southeastern has found itself on the wrong end of a series sweep after dropping the series finale to Arkansas-Monticello 13-3 on Sunday afternoon in Monticello, Ark.
The loss drops the Savage Storm to 17-16 on the season and 10-11 in conference play. SE slides to seventh in the league standings with nine GAC games to play on the schedule and 13 games remaining overall. The top six teams at the end of the regular season advance to the GAC postseason tournament.
It was also the fifth straight defeat for the Storm who have not had a losing skid reach five games since the middle of the 2009 season.
It was a rough day for Southeastern pitching as six different hurlers took the mound over the seven-inning contest.
Eddie Cervantes got the start and was saddled with the loss despite tossing just one inning in which he allowed five runs, two of which were earned, on three hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks.
Levi Lewis turned in the longest outing by going 3.1 innings in relief and allowing a pair of runs on one hit while striking out one and walking three.
Corey George,
Canyon Conley and
Storm Griffin each tossed one-third of an inning in succession and combined to allow eight runs on five hits with a strikeout and three walks.
Davis Cagle would collect the final two outs for SE, allowing a hit and striking out one.
The Storm were outhit by only three, 10-to-7, with
Trevor Bowen collecting two hits to lead the way while five others each picked up one.
Ryan Salter would collect a hit, a pair of walks and a pair of stolen bases, while
Evan Ramsey would connect on his seventh home run of the season.
The Storm got off to a good start by striking first thanks to a
Travis Caraway single that scored
Tucker Alexander in the top of the first inning.
The good times would not last long, however as UAM took advantage of the only Storm error of the day as well as a triple to post four runs in the bottom half of the first and mount a 4-1 lead.
SE picked up another run in the second inning on a Bowen RBI single that plated
Aaron Chalk and cut the deficit to 4-2.
The Boll Weevils would push the lead out to 5-2 with a run in the bo0ttom of the second before both team's bats went quiet for the third and fourth innings.
UAM, however, would explode offensively over the fifth and sixth innings, picking up three in the fifth and five more in the sixth to take its run total to 13.
Southeastern did get a solo home run from Ramsey in the top of the sixth, but it was not enough to kick start a rally as the Storm fell 13-3.
SE will be back on the diamond April 12-13 when its follows up its longest eastern road swing with its longest western road swing to face Northwestern Oklahoma State in a three-game conference set in Alva, Okla.
