Southeastern Drops Series at HSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Southeastern saw a three-run lead disappear in game one only to lose 5-4 in extra innings before suffering an 8-1 loss in the series finale at Henderson State on Saturday afternoon in Arkadelphia, Ark.
 
The losses drop the Savage Storm to 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in Great American Conference play.
 
CHevis Springer and Cade Clay turned in two-hit performances in the first game to help the Storm to eight hits as a team,
 
Ryan Salter, Springer and Clay each added an RBI.
 
Canyon Conley got the start and tossed 5.1 innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits while striking out six.
 
Mathew Benedict came on in relief and tossed 3.1 innings, allowing three unearned runs on two hits with three K's before handing the ball to Nick Johnson who tossed the final two innings but was saddled with the loss after allowing the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th.
 
HSU struck first with a run in the third, but SE answered with an RBI groundout by Salter in the fifth followed in the same inning by an RBI single by Springer for a 2-1 lead.
 
It grew to 3-1 in the eighth when Clay singled home Chance Burcham, and then 4-1 in the top of the ninth when Springer scored on a wild pitch.
 
The Reddies answered with an RBI double and a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings.
 
Then in the bottom of the 11th HSU scored the walk-off win on a Hawkins sac fly.
 
In the finale, HSU jumped to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the first and two more in the third.
 
SE got one back in the fourth on a Cody Coats RBI single that scored Salter, but the Reddies added three in the bottom half and another run in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-1 lead before the game was called on account of darkness.
 
Burcham collected three of the six Storm hits, finishing the game 3-for-3, while Coats drove in the only SE run of the contest.
 
Jonathan Furlong got the start and suffered the loss after tossing 3.2 innings and allowing seven runs, five earned, on nine hits with one strikeout.
 
Jaime Paxton tossed 1.1 innings in relief and struck out one without allowing a hit or a run before Jonathan Dailey came on to throw the final inning, allowing a run on a hit.
