Softball Rolls to Series Sweep of UAM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MONTICELLO, Ark. – Southeastern completed a three-game sweep of Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday afternoon by picking up a 4-2 win in the day's opener, followed by an 18-3 victory in the series finale in Monticello, Ark.
 
The wins move the Savage Storm to 26-10 overall on the season and 19-6 in Great American Conference play which leaves them atop the league standings with a two game lead in the loss column over second place Henderson State.
 
SE fell behind early in the opener when UAM picked up a run in the bottom of the second.
 
The answer came in the top of the sixth inning, starting with an RBI single by Haley Strawn that plated Sydney Kramer to tie the game at 1-1.
 
Then one batter later Courtney Riddle connected on a three-run home run that also scored Strawn and Laramie Beal to push the Storm out to a 4-1 lead.
 
The Cotton Blossoms would get one run back in the bottom of the seventh to fashion he 4-2 final score.
 
Strawn and Riddle each connected on a pair of hits, while Lacie Cook, Arianna Jones and Mindy McElroy each added one hit.
 
McElroy got the start and tossed 6.2 innings to pick up her 14th win of the year after allowing two runs on four hits.
 
Jacee Bennett faced one batter and earned the final out of the game to pick up her sixth save of the season.
 
The nightcap turned out to be the highest run output of the season for the Storm who crossed the 10-run line for the third time on the season and topped the previous high on the year of 14 by putting up 18 runs in a five-inning run-rule victory.
 
The 18 runs are the highest run total for SE since posting a 19-2 victory over Northeastern State on April 10 of the 2010 season.
 
What made this game different than most high-scoring contests is that SE put up its 18 runs on nine hits, taking advantage of 10 UAM errors.
 
The Storm hit the ground running in the first inning, loading the bases with one out for Strawn who drove in a run on a fielder's choice without UAM recording an out.
 
Riddle then followed by reaching on an error which allowed Kramer to score and take a 2-0 lead.
 
That was followed by back-to-back UAM errors which allowed Jones and Renneker to reach safely and Strawn and a pinch-running Shayna Milam to score for a 4-0 lead.
 
Jessica Simmons would draw a bases loaded walk to drive in a run in her second at gbat of the inning which was followed by an RBI single by Cook to give the Storm a 6-0 lead.
 
That lead doubled in the top of the second inning, with Jones and Conner Harmon each drawing bases loaded walks while the Storm took advantage of one hit and two errors to put up six runs in the inning and take a 12-0 lead.
 
The Blossoms got a run back in the bottom of the second, but SE answered with a Harmon RBI double, a Simmons RBI single and a Kelsey Overacker RBI groundout to push the advantage to 15-1.
 
Rachel Jones would reach on a two-out error in the fourth inning to plate Strawn and make the score 16-1.
 
UAM picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth, but a Kramer RBI single and a Strawn RBI groundout pushed the lead to 18-2.
 
The Blossoms would pick up a run in the bottom of the fifth to set the final at 18-3.
 
Simmons and Strawn each put up two hit performances, while five others added a hit each.
 
Simmons finished with three RBI in the leadoff spot, while Cook, Strawn and Harmon each drove in two, with five others adding one RBI each.
 
Shayna Milam got the start in the circle and the win after tossing 4.0 innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with four strikeouts.
 
Hosanna McCoy tossed the final inning and allowed a run on two hits.
