DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern opened with doubles wins over Cameron, but dropped four three-set matches in singles play in a 4-3 loss to Cameron over the weekend.
Â
The loss drops the Savage Storm to 4-6 on the season heading into a pair of home matches on March 23 against Dallas Baptist at 10 a.m. and the first conference match of the season on March 25 versus Oklahoma Baptist at 2 p.m. at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
Â
"Our men played some great doubles," said head coach
Brian Nelson. "And had a lot of energy going into singles. We picked up wins fairly quickly at #1 and #2 positions, giving us a 3-0 lead and needing only one more win to clinch the dual. Hats off to Cameron though as they never gave us and were able to fight at every position #3 - #6 to win all four of those matches in three sets and win the dual. I felt like we should have really closed out two of those four matches, but with some mistakes we let Cameron get back into them and beat us. We will learn from this and enter spring break to get some much needed rest. We will regroup and come back after break with high intensity for regional and conference matches."
Â
Against the Aggies, the duo of
George Botha and
Marin Jurkovic would open with a 6-3 win at one doubles, but a loss at number two would even double play.
Â
Guilherme Dos Santos and
Thabo Ncube would complete the doubles point for the Storm with a 6-3 win at number three for the 1-0 lead.
Â
In single play, No. 34
Juan Scoppetta picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 28 Bruno Vietri at the top spot to stretch the lead to 2-0.
Â
Dos Santos would follow suit at number two, earning a 6-4, 7-6 win to push the advantage to 3-0.
Â
However, SE would drop matches at three through six, all in three sets, with the Storm taking first sets in two of those.
Â
The four losses allowed CU to rally for the 4-3 win.
