Six Earn GAC Softball Honors

DURANT, Okla. – Six different Southeastern softball student-athletes combined for nine different Great American Conference honors on Wednesday, highlighted by a GAC Newcomer of the Year award for Cheyenne Mahy and a Freshman of the Year honor for Amberlyn Walsworth.
 
Walsworth also earned first team All-GAC honors as a pitcher, while Mahy added the same honors at the utility/pitcher position.  Kyia Monahwee was also a first team selection at second base, while Peyton Streetman was a first team pick in the outfield.
 
Kady Fryrear was a second team All-GAC selection at first base, while Monahwee added a second team selection as a utility/non-pitcher.
 
Additionally, Kamarie Wallace was recognized for her work in the classroom as a GAC Elite Scholar Athlete, the highest conference academic honor in the sport.
 
Mahy, a sophomore form Atwater, Calif., earned the league's Newcomer of the Year award and first team all-conference honors after putting together outstanding seasons at the plate and in the circle. She posted a 16-3 record in the circle with a 1.76 ERA and a pair of saves with 65 strikeouts.
 
At the plate she finished the regular season hitting .307 with four doubles, two triples, and a team-high 10 home runs while driving in 30 RBI.
 
Walsworth, a freshman from Shreveport, La., earned Freshman of the Year honors and first team All-GAC recognition at pitcher following a season in which she posted a 16-5 record with a 2.09 ERA. She added a pair of shutouts and a save while striking out a team-high 136 hitters and holding opponents to a .229 average.
 
Monahwee, a junior second baseman/outfielder from Morris, Okla., added first team honors at second base, while also taking second team recognition as a utility player after posting a .323 average with two doubles, two triples, and six home runs while driving in 23 RBI. She also matched the team lead in stolen bases with 14.
 
Streetman, a sophomore outfielder from Howe, Texas, was named first team All-GAC in the outfield after leading the Savage Storm with a .392 average on 47 hits with two doubles, a triple, and a home runs, while driving in 17 runs and scoring a team-high 27 runs.
 
Fryrear, a freshman from Tuttle, Okla., picked up second team all-conference honors after hitting .353 for the season, second on the team, with a team-high 48 hits, including eight doubles, a triple, and five home runs. She has driven in 25 RBI and scored 23 runs.
 
Wallace, a sophomore third baseman from Henryetta, Okla., is an occupational safety and health major who is one of just four softball student-athletes to earn Elite Scholar Athlete honors. Wallace hit .288 on the season with seven doubles, four homers, and 19 RBI while scoring 13 runs of her own.
 
Southeastern wrapped up the regular season with a 34-10 record overall and a 24-9 mark in GAC play, finishing third place in the league and will open Great American Conference Tournament play on March 14 at 6:30 p.m. against sixth-seeded Ouachita Baptist in Bentonville, Ark.
