DURANT, Okla. – After some schedule adjusting, Southeastern softball is set to open its 2022 season with six games over three days at the Arkansas Tech Winter Invitational in Houston, Texas, Feb. 5-7.
The Savage Storm opens play on Feb. 5 with a 1 p.m. matchup with Texas A&M-International before finishing the day against Texas A&M-Kingsville at 5 p.m.
Day two of the event will see SE take on No. 2-ranked Augustana at 10 a.m. before squaring off with No. 18 Angelo State at 2 p.m.
Southeastern closes out the trip on Feb. 7 with a 9 a.m. matchup with No. 15 Oklahoma Christian before ending the weekend with an 11 a.m. contest against Texas Woman's.
All games are being played at the Scrap Yard Sports Complex in Conroe, Texas.
The Storm head into the 2022 season picked to finish third according to the Great American Conference preseason poll.
Southeastern returns all six of its All-GAC honorees from last season in which the Storm posted a 36-11 record overall and a 24-9 mark in GAC play which was good for a tie for second.
That returning group is led by the conference's Newcomer of the Year and Freshman of the Year in
Cheyenne Mahy and Amberlynn Walsworth, respectively.
Mahy would go on to earn All-Region honors while posting a 16-4 record in the circle with a 1.91 ERA as well as hitting .307 with 10 home runs and 33 RBI.
Walsworth out together an 18-5 season a year ago and carried a 2.08 ERA with 146 strikeouts.
In addition,
Kyia Monahwee,
Peyton Streetman,
Kady Fryrear, and
Kamarie Wallace each picked up all-conference honors in 2021 and will be returning for 2022.
Five of SE's six opponents are members of the Lone Star Conference, with Angelo State picked third in the league just ahead of Oklahoma Christian. Texas A&M-Kingsville was sixth in the poll and Texas A&M-International was eighth. Texas Woman's was picked 13
th in the poll and is the only team on the weekend schedule for the Storm not picked in the top-half of its conference.
Augustana is the lone non-LSC school on the schedule for the weekend, and they enter as the No. 2 team in the nation and is a heavy favorite to win the Northern Sun this season.
