DURANT, Okla. - Southeastern will hit the road for the second of back-to-back road contests taking on Northwestern Oklahoma State at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Alva, Okla.
The Savage Storm come into the game with a 1-4 record overall and an 0-4 mark in the Great American Conference following a second-straight hard-to-swallow one-score loss at the hands of Arkansas Tech, 45-38. The Rangers enter the weekend winless at 0-6 in its first season in the GAC following a 41-3 loss to East Central.
Against the Rangers… Saturday marks the 71st meeting all-time between Southeastern and Northwestern Oklahoma State. With NWOSU joining the GAC this season it makes the Rangers SE's third-longest running rivalry in the league behind ECU and Southwestern Oklahoma State. The two schools last met in 2009 with SE coming out on top with a 29-9 victory which was its third in-a-row int he series. The Storm owns the overall series mark with a 41-28-1 mark. The first matchup was a 26-0 SE win in 1914 and the most consecutive wins by either team int he series is seven by SE from 1938 through 1949.
Southeastern celebrates 100th season of football… The 2012 season will mark the 100th season of competition for SE football which fielded its first team in 1909. Southeastern has fielded a team every year since then except for the span between 1943 and 1945 during World War II. SE has played 946 games over that span, posting a 452-450-44 record.
Notes from last time out… SE saw a 31-14 third quarter lead disappear in a 45-38 loss to Arkansas Tech... the loss drops SE to 1-4 overall and 0-4 in league play... SE's 336 yards rushing is the most as a team this season, as are the four rushing touchdowns scored... SE held a 489-to-428 advantage in total offense and has outgained four of its five opponents this season...
Ladarius Abrams turned in a season-best 178 yards rushing... Abrams and
Jercolby Bradley ebcome the first duo to each post 100-yard outings this year... Bradley has posted back-to-back 100-yard performances... Bradley has thrown for our run for a TD in all five games...
Izzy Eziakor has posted double-digit tackle totals in three-of-five games, including 11 against ATU.
About the Coaches… Ray Richards (Northern Michigan, 1981) took over the reins for the Southeastern Oklahoma State football program prior to the 2005 season and quickly built on to SE's successful history. Richards has compiled a 36-37 record at SE and an overall career record of 50-67, with head coaching stints at Southeastern and Southwest Baptist University. The 2011 squad opened the year with back-to-back wins before going to a 2-8 season and a ninth place finish in the first season of Great American Conference play. SE had three all conference award winners, highlighted by first team selection
Ryan Shelley who turned in the league's best single-game receiving mark with 225 yards against East Central. In seven seasons at SE, Richards' teams have produced 25 first team all-conference honors as well as 37 all-conference second team honors. His teams also won eight specialty awards in the LSC, including his own Coach of the Year nod following the 2005 season.
Alan Hall comes to Northwestern after serving for a year as athletic director and head football coach at Bible Baptist School in Savannah, Ga. Prior to that, Hall was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Savannah State University. In 2003, Hall became assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Division II Newberry (S.C.) College. His 2004 and 2005 teams finished in the top 25 in total offense, and he coached a candidate for the Harlon Hill Trophy, the Division II award for the nation's top player. Hall joined the Division I ranks in 2008 as offensive coordinator at Savannah State University. He later took a similar position at Winston-Salem (N.C.) State University before returning to Savannah State. In his career, Hall has coached four players who went on to compete in the National Football League and four junior college All-Americans.
