Southeastern Fights Hard but Falls

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TOPEKA, Kan. – Southeastern recovered from a tough opening day to push Missouri Western State to five sets, but was unable to finish off the win en route to dropping its final two matches in the Washburn Regional Crossover on Saturday in Topeka, Kan.
 
The Savage Storm fell to the Griffons 3-2 before dropping its weekend finale 3-0 to Truman State.  The losses drop SE to 2-16 on the season.
 
The Storm will return to action on Oct. 9 when it hosts Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m. in Bloomer Sullivan Gymnasium.
 
Against MWSU, Emily Gentle matched her season-high in kills with 19 on a .246 hitting performance.  Megan Kunkel also broke double-digits with 13.
 
Marina Dias guided the Storm offense with 29 assists to go with a team-high 18 digs.
 
Dias' 18 digs led the back row defense, followed by Kunkel's 14, Taylor Benner's 12 and Gentle's 10.
 
At the net, Natasha Smith and Gentle each tallied three blocks, while Kunkel added a pair of solo blocks.
 
The Storm fell behind 2-0 with losses of 25-17 and 25-10 in the opening two sets.  SE recovered, however, reeling off wins of 29-27 and 25-18, but was unable to hold the momentum in the deciding set, falling 18-16.
 
In the finale, Gentle paced the offense with 10 kills and hit .280.
 
Dias pitched in 12 assists and matched the team-high of six digs.
 
Benner, Dias and Kunkel each had six digs on the back row, while Smith led the way at the net with two blocks.
 
The Storm dropped the opening set 25-15 and followed that tune with losses of 25-15 and 25-16 to close out the match.
