Box Score CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Southeastern turned in five runs in the top of the ninth inning, but saw its rally fall one run short in a 9-8 loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday night at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach South Texas Baseball Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas.
The loss was the first of the season for the Savage Storm who slip to 2-1 on the year heading into Sunday's 12 p.m. meeting with St. Cloud State at Whataburger Field.
SE had four players with a pair of hits each, with
Vance Woodruff turning in a team-best three RBI, while
Tucker Alexander and
Josh Smith added two each.
Woodruff also got the start on the mound and was tagged with the loss after tossing 3.0 innings while allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits with four strikeouts.
Eddie Cervantes followed with 2.1 innings in relief while allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits.
Storm Griffin allowed two runs on two hits without retiring a batter before handing the ball to
David Cagle who struck out three and didn't allow a hit in 1.2 innings.
Corey George closed out the game with a scoreless inning.
The Storm trailed the Javelinas 9-3 after eight innings, but opened the ninth with the first two batters reaching and eventually scoring on Smith's double down the left field line to cut the deficit to 9-5.
After a
Chevis Springer double,
Ryan Salter would double home Smith to make the score 9-6.
Alexander would follow with a two-run single to right field to make the score 9-8, but that was as close as they would get.
TAMUK jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third, but a Woodruff two-run homer in the fourth tied the game at 2-2.
The Javelinas would add a run in the third and six in the sixth to mount a 9-2 edge.
Woodruff would pick up his third RBI in the eighth with a single to right that plated Smith to make the score 9-3.
