BENTONVILLE, Okla. – Southeastern women's tennis opened the Great American Conference tournament with a 5-2 win over Ouachita Baptist, but saw their tournament run come to an end in the semifinals in a 5-0 loss to top-seeded Arkansas Tech on Friday afternoon in Bentonville, Ark.
The Savage Storm snapped a six-match losing skid with a 5-2 win over the Tigers.
SE fell behind early with tight losses at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, but the duo of
Elba Haugen and
Marina Dias put the Storm on the board with a 9-8 win at No. 3 doubles.
Southeastern then responded in singles play, first with No. 1
Sabina Mardarenko posting a 6-4, 6-4 win to even the match at 2-2.
Fabiola Juarez put the Storm in front for good with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3.
SE cruised in the bottom third of the lineup, with Haugen scoring a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 before Dias sealed the victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6.
The semifinal did not fare quite as well for the Storm as top-seeded ATU picked up 8-1 wins at all three doubles positions to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
SE was unable to bounce back as the Golden Suns scored straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 6 to bring Southeastern's run to an end.
