Football Suffers Rough Loss at No. 7 HSU

Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Southeastern closed the deficit against No. 7 Henderson State to one score midway through the third quarter, but the Reddies scored 35 unanswered points to close the game and the Savage Storm found itself on the wrong end of a 60-17 loss on Thursday night in Arkadelphia, Ark.
 
The loss drops SE to 1-2 overall on the year and 1-2 in Great American Conference play heading into a Sept. 27 matchup against Ouachita Baptist at 6 p.m. at Paul Laird Field.
 
The explosive Storm offense was held in check with just 274 total yards and its lowest rushing output of the year with 119 yards.


For the second-straight week Ronnie Green led the rushing attack with 75 yards on 10 carries, whyile Larry Cheeks added 32 yards on seven carries with a touchdown.
 
Ryan Polite turned in a 24-of-41 passing effort for 155 yards and one score.
 
That TD pass went to Nick Sioson who had just the one catch, while Anthony Foster hauled in eight receptions for 45 yards, while Kaymon Farmer and Franky Okafor each grabbed five catches.
 
The Storm defense was stung for 627 total yards, with 382 of them coming through the air.
 
Troy Parker led the way with nine tackles and a pass breakup, while Thomas Curry added eight stops and the duo of Kevin Jones-Dickerson and Tanner Ginavan each had seven.
 
The Reddies opened scoring on the game's first play when Kevin Rodgers hit Joseph Snapp for 62 yards and after a two-point conversion opened up an 8-0 lead 16 seconds into the contest.
 
However, the Storm did not sit back and drove 54 yards on seven plays and Polite connected with Sioson to cut the deficit to 8-7 with 11:40 to go in the first quarter.
 
HSU would answer with a Jaquan Cole rushing touchdown on its next drive and a field goal with 1:33 to go in the first to open up an 18-7 lead after one quarter.
 
They would push that advantage to 25-7 midway through the second, but the Storm would answer with a nine play, 59 yard drive that ended with a four yard Larry Cheeks touchdown run to close the gap to 25-14 which would hold to be the score at halftime.
 
Jake Walters would then get SE to 25-17 when he connected on a 37 yard field goal with 11:32 to play in the third quarter.
 
However, the Reddies would put up 28-straight points to mount a 53-17 lead with 5:08 to play in the game.
 
SE would be forced to punt with under four minutes to play, but a bad snap would end up in a fumble deep in Storm territory which was picked up by Trevon Del Rio at the three yard line and carried in for the score to increase the deficit to 60-17.
