MERMPHIS, Tenn. – Southeastern cross country opened its 2015 season with a road trip to Memphis, Tenn., for the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic where it finished 21
st among 26 teams from throughout the NCAA divisions.
Hosted by Memphis, the race boasted 10 division I schools, including three Southeastern Conference programs, while also inviting D-II through NJCAA schools, combined with unattached runners for a 5K race that featured 249 runners.
Bailee Weger was the top Savage Storm runner in the event, finishing 133
rd with a time of 20:57.06. The time is off her best pace from a season ago, but nearly 30 seconds better than her pace to begin the season in 2014.
Mireille Hernandez was the first of SE's four freshmen to cross, finishing 167
th with a time of 21:48.76.
She was followed by another freshman in
Marisol Lara who turned in a 22:03.09 to finish 176
th.
Amanda Kirby followed her with a time of 22:19.98 to finish 187
th.
Victoria Avila, the third of the team's freshmen runners, crossed in 200
th after posting a time of 22:58.65.
She was followed two runners later by the team's lone senior,
Shaina Crites who tallied a time of 23:06.21 to finish in 202
nd.
Esmerelda Hernandez-Ortiz was the fourth SE freshman to finish and the final Storm runner, posting a time of 25:01.78 to finish 228
th.
The team finished 21
st in the field of 26 teams, just one place behind Arkansas Tech. In all, three Great American Conference schools participated, with Harding finishing fourth in the event.
The team will be back in action on Sept. 12 when it heads to Denton, Texas, for the Ken Garland Invitational hosted by North Texas.
