SE Finds Success at OKC Intercollegiate

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Southeastern's women put on a show in both singles and doubles play with the team picking up flight championships in two separate singles flights as well as two separate doubles flights over the weekend at the OKC Intercollegiate in Oklahoma City, Okla.

"It was great to see our women's team really step up this weekend," said head coach Brian Nelson, "They made a great improvement over two weeks ago's tournament, and won 4 of the 8 draws this weekend. This was a better result than any other team in attendance. Physically it was tough playing all those matches, but mentally they are confident and look forward to the GAC championships next weekend in Russelville. We look forward to playing against our conference teams and see what we can do."

SE had a pair of teams in the first flight of doubles play, with the duo of Steffi McDonald and Skye Royall picking up a 6-3 win over Ouachita Baptist's Austynn Crocker and Clarisa Valenzuela in the first round.

The duo would follow with a 6-3 win over the pair from Cowley before squeaking out a 7-6 win over second seeded Justine Lespes and Carol Mora from Seward to reach the flight one finals.

Once there the pair would finish what they started with a 6-2 win over the third-seeded pair from Midwestern State in Anda Ghinga and Kyndall Quiroz.

Royall would maintain her success in singles play as she would open play in flight one with a 6-0, 6-1 win over OBU's Haylee Cannon. She followed that with an upset of third seeded Zungu Ntokozo before downing top-seeded Justine Lespes 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 to reach the championship match.

Once there she would handle Wylie's Ana Khrustaleva in three sets in come-from-behind fashion 0-6, 6-3, 10-8.

Cozamanis entered flight four as the number two seed and would run through the field accordingly, opening with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Texas A&M-Texarkana's Marie Peters.

That was followed by a 6-1, 6-1 win over NSU's Irene Romero as well as a 6-0, 6-0 victory over MSU's Kanaha Furutani to reach the finals.
