SE Splits On Day Two in Kansas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PITTSBURG, Kan. – Day two of the Pitt State Classic looked a lot like day one, opening the day with a 3-1 win over Missouri Southern before finishing the day with a 3-0 loss to Quincy on Saturday afternoon.
 
SE finished the weekend with a 2-0 record against MIAA regional competition, including a win over the host Pitt State, but posted an 0-2 record against the GLVC, with only the match against Rockhurst counting as regional competition between the two.
 
The Savage Storm move to 2-2 on the season and will now return home to host its own tournament, the South Central Classic which will be played Sept. 13-14 in Bloomer Sullivan Arena.
 
Megan Kunkel turned in the best offensive game of the young season against MSSU, posting 20 kills and hitting a season-high .459 in the match with just three errors in 37 attempts.
 
Emily Gentle chipped in 13 kills in her first action of the season.
 
Madelynne Cera dished out 37 assists in her first playing time of the year, while also pitching in four kills and three digs.
 
Taylor Benner led the defense with 14 digs, while Gentle turned in the double-double with 11 digs.
 
The Lions took the first set by a 25-21 mark, but the Storm responded by hitting .393 as a team in the second set to reel off a 25-16 win.  That momentum carried into the third set with a 25-22 win and SE closed out the match with a 25-19 fourth set, hitting .455 as a team in the final set.
 
In the weekend finale, Gentle led the offense with 14 kills, while Kunkel had her fourth-straight double-digit kill match with 11.
 
Cera handed out 28 assists in the match and added two kills, three digs and a pair of blocks.
 
Benner again paced the back row defense with 11 digs, while Cera and Julia Benford each had a pair of blocks.
 
SE got off to a slow start with Quincy taking the first set 25-18, the Storm bounced back and forced extra points in the second set but could not close it out, falling 27-25.  QU would finish the sweep with a 25-21 win in the third set.
