Box Score 1 DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern women's fell to a pair of nationally-ranked opponents before bouncing back and closing out the weekend with a 4-3 win over Metro State.
Â
The split moves the Savage Storm to 4-3 overall on the season with its next official action set for March 10 against UT-Arlington and Texas-Tyler.
Â
"Very similar start to the weekend," said head coach
Brian Nelson, "As I felt like we should compete rather well against Midwestern State, but fell 4-0. We played great at #3 doubles as
India Shiaelis and
Georgia Hosking won 6-1, but the doubles point came down to #1 doubles as Castaneda and Cozamanis fell in a close one 6-4. In singles, the top 3 positions lost in straight sets to clinch the match 4-0 for Midwestern. When clinched,
Georgia Hosking had split sets and was in a full third."
Â
"Later that night," he added, "We didn't get to start until 6:00 pm vs. Angelo State and a very cold evening. We played really well, against the #14 team in D2. All three doubles matches were very close,
Georgia Hosking and
India Shiaelis had a 6-5 lead at #3 doubles. The number 1 doubles pair of
Zulay Castaneda and
Vanessa Cozamanis went to a tiebreaker, but lost a close one in the breaker. We continued the momentum on to singles and won at #4 and #6 singles to gain two points. Castaneda took her opponent to three sets, but fell 6-3 in third clinching the match for Angelo State.
Elizaveta Tregubova was still on court in a close one, down 6-4, and 5-4."
Â
"In the last match of the weekend," he continued, "The match came down to the very last match as Freshman
Rhythm Aswal defeated her opponent 6-4 in the third set to clinch the match for our women. We dropped the doubles point, but picked up wins in singles from
Vanessa Nitu at #2,
Elizaveta Tregubova at #3,
India Shiaelis at #5, and
Rhythm Aswal at #6 singles."
Â
SE snapped a three-match losing skid with its win over Metro State, but that win had to come in come-from-behind fashion as SE dropped the one and three doubles positions to fall behind 1-0 early.
Â
After a loss at one left the Storm down 2-0,
Vanessa Nitu started the comeback with a straight-sets 6-3, 6-2 win at number two.
Â
Elizaveta Tregubova would then knot the match at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at number three.
Â
A win at number four would briefly give MSC the lead at 3-2, but
India Shiaelis would again tie the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win at number five.
Â
Rhythm Aswal would close out the victory with a thriller, taking the number six spot 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 to clinch the 4-3 victory.
Â
The Storm had a strong effort against No. 14 Angelo State, despite falling behind 1-0 after doubles and looking up at a deficit,
Georgia Hosking would put together a 6-5, 6-3 win at number four to get SE on the board.
Â
Shiaelis would add a 6-1, 6-2 win at number six to close the gap and make the final 4-2.
Â
Against No. 16 Midwestern State, SE picked up a 6-1 win at three doubles thanks to the duo of Hosking and Shiaelis, but would ultimately drop the doubles point.
Â
MSU would follow with wins at one, two, and three in singles before the Storm could get on the board, finalizing a 4-0 final score.
