DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern swept its way to the doubles point and never looked back on its way to a 6-1 victory over Texas-Permian Basin on Monday afternoon.
Â
The win give the Savage Storm a 1-0 record to open the season with a Feb. 18 matchup versus Dallas Baptist in Dallas, Texas, coming up next on the schedule.
Â
"I would like to see our ladies and men come out with more energy and be aggressive in doubles," said head coach
Brian Nelson. "That should come though as we can make warmups more aggressive before the match, and as they gain experience. For a first match against a good D2 opponent, it's great to see the 6-1 win.
Sara Gonzalez was a highlight today, as she dropped a close first set 6-4, but rallied to win 6-0 and 6-2. It's always good as a coach to get three set wins. We will keep practicing hard the next week and a half and look forward to getting back on the court in 11 days at Dallas Baptist University."
Â
Vanessa Cozamanis and
Skye Royall opened doubles play with a 6-2 win at the number one position, with
Elizaveta Tregubova and
Georgia Hosking securing the doubles point with a 6-4 win at number three.
Â
Chiara Matteodo and
Sara Gonzalez finished off the sweep, but had to come through in a tiebreak to take the match 7-6 (4).
Â
Matteodo would start singles play with a win at the number three positon over UTPB's Rhea Singh, 6-3, 6-2, to extend the lead, which would reach 3-0 when Hosking polished off Anaya Smith at number five, 6-2, 6-3.
Â
Royall would provide the clincher at number two with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lore Mewis.
Â
Gonzalez would push the score to 5-0 with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 win at number four followed by a Cozamanis 6-1, 6-0 win at number six to push the lead to 6-0 before a three-set loss at the one position would set the final score at 6-1 in favor of the Storm.
