SE Women Post Back-to-Back Wins

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern swept its way through a pair of midweek matches in style, starting with a 7-0 sweep of Arkansas-Fort Smith before downing No. 38 Midwestern State on Wednesday by a 4-3 final score at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

The wins lifts the Savage Storm, who dipped in the rankings to No. 42 in the ITA Team rankings despite recent success, to 10-3 overall on the year and stretches their current winning streak to four matches.

"Two great days again for the women," said head coach Brian Nelson, "Beating two good teams. We handled UAFS rather easily Tuesday 7-0, setting up a big battle with Midwestern State today. We knew going into the match that it would be very tough. Against Midwestern all three doubles matches were very close, but we dropped the doubles going down 1-0. The women would not give up though, winning in straight sets at #1 Vanessa Nitu, #2 Skye Royall, #3 Chiara Matteodo, and at #6 Vanessa Cozamanis to clinch the match and put us ahead 4-1. The final two matches on court were great matches, with both Elizaveta Tregubova and Sara Gonzalez falling in third set matches. This is the first women's win over Midwestern State since 2009, and only the second time all time."

SE jumped in front early in doubles play versus UAFS, with Chiara Matteodo and Elizaveta Tregubova picking up a 6-3 win at number three.

Following a loss at number one to even the doubles battle, Sara Gonzales and Vanessa Cozamanis would add a 6-1 win at number two to secure the doubles point.

Gonzalez would make the quickest work of her opponent in singles play, snagging a 6-4, 6-4 win at number four to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Skye Royall followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win at number two before Matteodo wrapped up a 1-6, 6-0, 6-1 win at number three to clinch the victory.

However, the Storm was not done scoring as Tregubova followed with a 7-6, 6-1 win at number five, with Vanessa Nitu adding a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 win at number one while Cozamanis rounded out the sweep with a 6-2, 7-5 win at number six.

The next day SE found itself in a different match entirely, first having to play catchuop after dropping the doubles point and trailing 1-0.

Nitu would even the score with a big win at number one singles by a 7-6, 6-0 margin.

Royall added a 6-1, 6-3 win at number two with Cozamanis tacking on a 6-4, 6-3 win at number six to give SE a 3-1 advantage.

MSU would rally with wins at four and five, but Matteodo would close out the Storm victory with a 7-5, 6-4 win at number three to make the final score 4-3.
