SE Splits Weekend, Earns Win over No. 17 WU

Box Score 1 DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern opened its weekend road swing with a narrow 4-3 loss to Cameron in Lawton, Okla., but bounced back in a big way by picking up a 4-3 win over No. 17 Washburn in Wichita Falls, Texas.

The split moves the Savage Storm to 4-2 overall on the season heading into a March 9 home matchup versus Division I Missouri State at 10 a.m. at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

"Although we lost to Cameron this weekend," said head coach Brian Nelson, "We won a big one against Washburn. Washburn women are always tough, as they finished last year as the #2 team in our region. We lost to them last year 4-3 in a clincher, and it was our time this year as the ladies really wanted this one. This should help us regionally for the future by picking up this win. The Cameron match was a tough one, they are very solid this year and we were just one point away. They had just beat #5 Columbus State last week 5-2, so we knew we are doing well both regionally and nationally and continue to improve. We have a lot of women's matches coming up this week, so we want to continue to improve and play some great tennis heading into spring break."

SE opened its road swing with a narrow 4-3 loss to Cameron, who was coming off a win over No. 5 Columbus State.

The Storm dropped the doubles point and lost and with losses at three and four singles, found itself in an early 3-0 hole.

SE bounced back and got on the board with a win at number two, and followed by picking up wins at numbers five and six to even the match at 3-3. Unfortunately, a loss at the one position would tip the scales in favor of the Aggies.

Southeastern followed up that tough loss by picking up one of the bigger wins in recent Storm history as it would topple 17th-ranked Washburn.

The upset win looked to be a longshot early as SE had one of its toughest doubles outings of the season, dropping the three position 6-0 and falling 6-1 at the one positon.

Trailing 1-0, the Storm bounced back in singles play, although it did not look to be the case early as losses at numbers one and four in singles play would leave SE in a 3-0 hole.

Elizaveta Tregubova would get the rally moving at number three with a win to get SE on the board at 3-1.

Vanessa Cozamanis followed suit with a win at number six to close the gap to 3-2.

Skye Royall would square things up at 3-3 after picking up a win at the number two spot to even the match at 3-3.

Sara Gonzalez opened play at the five spot by winning the first set, but saw the match even with a second set loss.  She jumped out to a 3-0 in the third and never looked back on her way to a 6-3 win in the deciding set to secure the 4-3 win for Southeastern.
