DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern bounced back into the win column with a victory over in-state rival Northeastern State on Thursday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
Â
The win lifts the Savage Storm to 12-5 overall on the season with its Great American Conference openers versus Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist slated for April 9, with the HSU contest set for 10 a.m. and the OBU matchup at 2 p.m. at the SE Tennis Complex.
Â
"We believe this is only the second time," said head coach
Brian Nelson, "And second straight, to beat the Notheastern State women. According to NSU's website, they were 25-0 against us all time before beating them last year. It was not a pretty day today as it was very, very windy outside, but our women played some great doubles and then finished off in singles to secure an important region win for the Storm. We look forward to our first GAC conference matches this Saturday as we face Henderson State at 10:00 am Saturday, and then Ouachita Baptist at 2:00 pm Saturday."
Â
SE swept through doubles play to take a 1-0 lead out of the gate, with the duo of
Skye Royall and
Georgia Hosking picking up a 6-1 win at one doubles.
Â
That was followed by
Vanessa Cozamanis and
Sara Gonzalez turning in a matching 6-1 win at number two doubles to clinch the point.
Â
The Southeastern lead grew quickly in singles play as NSU was forced to take a default being shorthanded at number six, but the Storm would lose ground with an injury default at number three, cutting the lead to 2-1.
Â
Hosking would pick up a 6-2, 6-0 win over Irene Romero at number five with a 6-2, 6-0 win, pushing the lead to 3-1.
Â
Elizaveta Tregubova followed with a match clinching win at number four, holding on for a 6-2, 7-5 win over Melissa Vera.
Â
Vanessa Nitu would pick up a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 win at number one to push the lead to 5-1, while an NSU win in three sets at number two would make the final score 5-2.
