Shockley Paces Women to Top Spot at OPSU

GOODWELL, Okla. – Martie Shockley took home the women's All-Around title to lead Southeastern to a first place finish at the season-ending OPSU Rodeo in Goodwell, Okla.

Her effort paced a group that not only finished first as a team, but sent two qualifiers to the finals in each of the three events.

Shockley took home the all-around title thanks to her efforts in the goat tying and the barrel racing events.

In goat tying she put together an 8.4 in the first round to reach the finals in third place. Once in the finals she would match her first-round run with another 8.4 to finish second in the round and move up to second in the average.

In the barrel racing event she would open the competition with a 17.80 which split 9th/10th to reach the final, but cut that time down to a 17.55 in the finals to finish third in the round and move up to fourth in the average.

Shockley was joined in the finals of both the goat tying and the barrel racing by Hannah Giger.

In her first goat tying run, Giger would post a 9.6 which qualified eighth in the long-go. She followed that performance up with a 9.2 on Saturday which was good for third in the round and moved her to fifth for the average.

Giger would finish in front of Shockley in the opening round of the barrel racing after clocking a time of 17.74 which ranked sixth in the round.  Her finals time of 17.94 would put her in seventh place in the round and move her to sixth place in the average.

The Storm also featured a pair of qualifiers in the breakaway roping.

That duo was led by Hannah Hughes who put together a 2.4 in the opening round to split 2nd/3rd in the round before following that performance up with a 3.4 in the finals which earned her a first-place finish in the round and lifted her to first overall in the average for the weekend.

Mataya Eklund joined her in the finals after posting a 2.7 in the first round to qualify to the finals in seventh, but would take a no time in the finals which dropped her out of the average.

SE has wrapped its regular season with its next action being the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo., June 12-18.
