Anthony Bruner was a basketball standout for Southeastern Oklahoma State from 1994-1996 where he earned All-American honors and wrote his name in the men’s basketball record book.
Â
The Norman, Okla., native played for head coach Tony Robinson and helped the Savages to 38 wins over two seasons, culminating in a trip to the NAIA National Tournament in 1996.
Â
Bruner was an All-American for Southeastern in 1996 and earned the honor at both the junior college and high school levels before that.
Â
Two of his three All-America awards came when he played for Robinson, the first one at Norman High School and the last one at Southeastern.
Â
He played two years at Bacone Junior College before transferring to Southeastern as a junior and was the leading scorer that year with 427 points.
Â
As a senior, he turned in the school’s sixth-best single season scoring mark with 788 points, and at one point led the nation in scoring with 27.0 points per game.
Â
During that senior season he connected on 104 three-pointers and shot 51 percent from behind the arc en route to earning All-American honors and leading the Savages to the national tournament. Both 3-point attempts taken and made were single-season records and he was tied for fourth with 61 steals in his junior year and finished fourth in career steals with 115.
Â
He earned All-Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference honors both seasons as he posted 1,215 points for his career, which is seventh best in school history. Bruner turned in thirty 20-point performances, and over his career had six games where he scored 30-or-more points. His career best 37 points was against Texas Wesleyan on Dec. 5, 1995.
Â
He was named Southeastern’s Male Athlete of the Year for 1995-96.
Â
Bruner, through his efforts on the court, excelled to a level that brings great honor to Southeastern Oklahoma State University. The University honored him with membership in the Southeastern Oklahoma State Athletics Hall of Fame on August 23, 2014.
