Football, Basketball (1921-25); Football Coach (1926-27)
Brennon Witt was born in Eglantine, Arkansas on May 30, 1903. He graduated from Durant High School and entered Southeastern in 1921.
Witt was a great athlete—one of the most outstanding two-sport lettermen in the history of the university. He led the Savages to outstanding seasons in both sports.
He was perhaps the best collegiate basketball player in Oklahoma during his time. Witt was a 6’4’’ center who was considered tall in that period. He controlled the jump balls, which followed all field goals, and was a good shooter with a feared post pivot shot. He was a four year star on the court and, in 1923, led the Savages to an almost perfect season—marred only by a single loss and that in the semifinals of the national semi-pro basketball tournament in Kansas City.
Witt was named to the All-Conference basketball team three times and was twice chosen as an All-Conference football player. The Durant High School product was a triple threat quarterback. He was an outstanding passer who, in a 1923 game, completed a pass that traveled over 70 yards in the air. In addition to his passing ability, he was a good runner, a strong punter, and a smart field general.
The 1923 football team, quarterbacked by Brennon Witt, was undefeated as they scored 326 points while yielding only 6 to their opponents.
Witt coached the Savage basketball team in 1926-27 and taught and coached in Oklahoma schools until 1933. He moved to Roswell, New Mexico in that year and remained there until his premature death on November 8, 1950.
Brennon Witt was widely known as an outstanding athlete. He was inducted into the Southeastern Athletic Hall of Fame on January 21, 1978.
