Sports Information Director (1968-99)

Harold Harmon has long been associated with Southeastern athletics, spending the largest part of that association as the school’s first sports information director, a post he held for 31 years.

Coverage of SE athletics in the area has long been painted by his brush as he served as the sports editor for the Durant Daily Democrat for more than 33 years and over that time has been an award winning writer and columnist, with his feature stories earning honors from United Press International and the Associated Press.

He also served as a broadcaster for 13 seasons, covering football, basketball and baseball.

Harmon began his career splitting time between working for the Katy Railroad and handling publicity duties for Southeastern athletics, a juggling act he performed for diligently while working on little or no sleep after a night of Savage sporting events.

He has seen Southeastern attain some of its greatest achievements since taking his post in 1968, including multiple trips to national tournaments, All-American performances and the careers of many athletes and coaches that already adorn the Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame.

He resigned his post as Sports Information Director in 1999, but has not left the world of Southeastern athletics. His attendance at home events, and many road events, has been a mainstay even since his retirement, missing just a tiny number of home games since joining the SE athletics family in the 1960’s.

Despite retiring, He has also held several posts through which he has continued to support and publicize the University, including maintaining a column in the Durant Daily Democrat and holding a position as staff writer for University Communications.

He was inducted into the Bryan County Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003, an organization he himself helped initiate.

Harold Harmon, throughout his years contributing to the recognition and improvement of Southeastern athletics, has brought great honor to Southeastern Oklahoma State University. The University honored him with membership in the Southeastern Oklahoma State Athletics Hall of Fame on August 28, 2010.
