Basketball (1946-49)

Troy “Curly” Webb was a Savage star basketballer in the late 1940’s. Born March 30, 1922 at Caddo, Oklahoma, he grew up in Caney, Oklahoma where he attended both elementary and secondary schools. An outstanding high school player, he was later selected to the Daily Oklahoman All-Decade High School Basketball Team of the 1940’s.

Troy served five years in the army as an executive officer of a field artillery unit during World War II. He later served two years during the Korean War.

He entered Southeastern in 1946 and graduated in three years. He became an immediate star for Coach Bloomer Sullivan’s Savages. Webb was selected to the All-Conference team three times. He was a prolific scorer who led the Oklahoma Collegiate Conference in scoring in 1948. He also set a Southeastern single game record with 35 points against Northwestern State, a feat which broke Bok Laughlin’s twenty year old school record.

Southeastern fans best remember Curly Webb as a pioneer of the jump shot. Prior to his time, the standard shot was the one or two handed set shot. Curly developed his jump shot while in the military service and he was truly one of the nation’s first jump shooters, a skill that thrilled Savage fans and amazed opponents.

Troy served as a school administrator and coach at Boynton and Oktaha for several years before joining the staff of the State Department of Education. He became a member of the Southeastern Oklahoma State University faculty in the Safety Education Department in 1970.

Troy “Curly” Webb was an outstanding Savage basketball player. He was inducted into the Southeastern Athletic Hall of Fame on January 30, 1982.
